An overview of our brand new PICU

The new facility is known as a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU), and it will be accessed through the child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

It will be a purpose built, 8 bed unit for 13-18 year olds with very complex mental health needs that cannot be managed in a less restrictive environment. It will provide:

  • improved emergency support and standards of care for children and young people
  • younger patients with the specialist care they need
  • the latest facilities will improve recovery times
  • treatment closer to friends and family, with space for families to stay if needed
  • fewer distressing out-of-area placements, which separates children and young people from their loved ones, hampering their chances of recovery.

What our team say about working for us

“Working in inpatient CAMHS has been incredibly rewarding. The young people here are inspiring, and colleague's genuine, individualised care makes a real difference to their recovery. I was initially unsure about the inpatient environment, but I’ve loved every moment and would highly recommend it as a supportive and fulfilling place to work.” Specialist Nurse.

"As an apprentice, I've been building my skills to better support our young people through life’s tougher times. Over the years, I’ve grown alongside this service, and every day brings a new chance to learn and make a difference. I’ve seen first-hand the strength and resilience of the young people we support, and it inspires me to keep learning so we can meet their changing needs. I’m lucky to work with such a passionate, supportive team as together, we help young people believe in themselves and feel hopeful about the future." Occupational therapist apprentice.

"I feel privileged to work alongside such a dedicated team, supporting young people and their families, through some of their most challenging times. It’s deeply rewarding to see the positive changes we can make together.” Inpatient CAMHS social worker.
